History

The first edition was staged in Argentina in 1916 with Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay taking part; Uruguay became the inaugural champion. The tournament was originally known as the South American Championship and grew alongside the development of CONMEBOL and international football in the region. Since 1975 the competition has been known as Copa América. Its history connects the major South American national teams and generations of players from Uruguay’s early successes through Brazil, Argentina and other champions.
