History

French professional league football began in 1932 under a structure overseen by the French federation, with post-war institutional changes eventually producing the modern professional league administration. Ligue 1 has connected eras dominated by clubs such as Saint-Étienne, Marseille, Lyon, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain. Footballopedia links Ligue 1 to those clubs, French national-team players, European competition, domestic cup football, managers and season-by-season title races. The competition page acts as the root for deeper French club and historical league expansion.
