10 Historic Football Clubs Founded Before 1900 That Shaped the Game
Ten clubs established before 1900 that influenced football rules, competitions and the game’s global spread. Founding dates are not an all-time ranking.
History and selection criteria
This is a curated historical selection, not a claim that these are the ten oldest surviving clubs or the ten best teams. The criterion is a documented nineteenth-century foundation and a meaningful connection to the development or expansion of association football. The entries are ordered by founding year. Some organisations began as broader sports clubs before developing dedicated football teams; those distinctions matter.
1. Sheffield FC — 1857
Sheffield FC is commonly recognised as the world’s oldest continuing association football club. Its significance includes the Sheffield Rules tradition, a set of local laws that developed before the Football Association standardised its code. The club demonstrates that modern football had multiple early rule-making centres, not a single moment of invention in London.
2. Notts County — 1862
Notts County represents the early formation of organised club football outside London and Sheffield. Its nineteenth-century development connects the era of local fixtures with league competition after 1888. The date refers to the club’s formation, not to a modern claim about uninterrupted membership of any particular league.
3. Nottingham Forest — 1865
Nottingham Forest grew within a city where sporting institutions were becoming more formal. The club developed into an enduring participant in English competitions and would later achieve extraordinary European success. Its founding shows how the first generation of clubs became institutions capable of outliving the original rules and playing conventions.
4. Queen’s Park — 1867
Queen’s Park played a defining role in early Scottish football, including the passing game often associated with the Scottish style. It is too simplistic to claim one club invented all passing, but Queen’s Park helped establish a style and a competitive culture that influenced the sport far beyond Glasgow.
5. Aston Villa — 1874
Aston Villa is indispensable to the history of league football because William McGregor, a club director, helped develop the Football League in 1888. The organisation of regular fixtures was as important as any single result: reliable competition helped clubs plan schedules, share gate receipts and build enduring rivalries.
6. Everton — 1878
Everton began as St Domingo’s football team and soon adopted the name by which it is known. Its early history is bound to the development of football in Liverpool. Later changes in its home ground led directly to the creation of a separate institution at Anfield, a reminder that stadium disputes could reshape whole cities’ sporting geography.
7. Celtic — 1887
Celtic was established in Glasgow in 1887 and played its first match in 1888 against Rangers. The club’s community origins and the growth of Scottish league competition illuminate how football became tied to local identity and civic organisation. Its later European success should not erase the nineteenth-century roots.
8. Genoa — 1893
Genoa was founded in 1893 as an athletic and cricket club associated with British expatriates. The football activity became influential in Italy’s earliest national championships. The founding date of a multisport institution should not be confused with the start of any modern Italian professional league.
9. Juventus — 1897
Juventus was established in Turin in 1897 by a group of students. Its survival through changes in Italian football governance makes it an illustration of the transition from local amateur clubs to national institutions. Juventus’s later trophies belong to different eras, but its foundation belongs squarely in the nineteenth century.
10. Barcelona — 1899
FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 through a group associated with Joan Gamper. Its origin reflects the international networks that brought football to the Iberian Peninsula. The later club became a major sporting and cultural institution; understanding that growth means keeping the small-scale 1899 beginning separate from its twentieth-century reputation.
How to use this list and what it leaves out
These founding years belong to very different sporting systems. The order is chronological, not a claim that later clubs were less important. A club created as a cricket or multisport institution may have developed its football section later; an accurate timeline records the difference instead of using one founding date to explain all modern achievements.
