CHAPTER 01

What an NWSL champion actually wins

The National Women's Soccer League has crowned a playoff champion in every completed traditional season from 2013 to 2025 except 2020, when the league did not stage a normal regular season or championship playoffs. The winner of the championship final is not necessarily the team that finished first in the regular-season standings. That distinction is crucial for anyone comparing titles across clubs. The NWSL Shield recognizes the best regular-season record, while the NWSL Championship goes to the club that emerges from the playoffs. A Challenge Cup victory is a third, separate honor. Footballopedia keeps the competitions apart and lists results by completed season rather than inventing a 2026 winner before that championship has occurred.

CHAPTER 02

Champions from 2013 to 2017

Portland Thorns won the inaugural championship in 2013. FC Kansas City followed with back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015, making it one of the league's early dynasties despite the club's later closure. Western New York Flash claimed the 2016 championship, and Portland added a second title in 2017. This sequence captures a period when the NWSL was still proving its durability after earlier American professional leagues had folded. Club identities must be handled carefully: a historical trophy belongs to the team that actually won it, not automatically to an unrelated later club with a similar city or brand.

CHAPTER 03

North Carolina and the disrupted 2020 season

North Carolina Courage won the championship in both 2018 and 2019, demonstrating a sustained period of strength. The 2019 final ended 4–0 against Chicago Red Stars. The following year is an exception in any year-by-year list. The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted conventional league operations, and no normal NWSL Championship was awarded for 2020. The NWSL did organize other competitions that year, including a Challenge Cup and Fall Series, but their winners must not be inserted into the standard league champions column. Marking 2020 as no championship held is more accurate than leaving the year unexplained.

CHAPTER 04

Washington, Portland and Gotham 2021–2023

Washington Spirit won the 2021 championship after beating Chicago Red Stars 2–1 in extra time, with Kelley O'Hara providing the winning goal. Portland Thorns then defeated Kansas City Current 2–0 in the 2022 final, with Sophia Smith, now Sophia Wilson, scoring first and earning championship MVP honors. NJ/NY Gotham FC claimed the 2023 title with a 2–1 final victory over OL Reign. Those seasons show how the playoff crown moved between clubs and how new star players became central to the league's identity. A reader interested in an individual scorer should be able to move directly from the list to a full player or match page.

CHAPTER 05

Orlando Pride and Gotham: 2024–2025

Orlando Pride won the 2024 Championship by defeating Washington Spirit 1–0, completing a standout season with the league trophy. NJ/NY Gotham FC then defeated Washington 1–0 in the 2025 final; Rose Lavelle scored in the 80th minute and was named the championship game's MVP. For Gotham, it was a second league championship after 2023. The Spirit were finalists in successive seasons but were not champions in either year. This distinction is particularly important because Washington also won the 2025 Challenge Cup. Lists that combine different trophies into one champion label produce incorrect search results and confuse the historical record.

CHAPTER 07

How this archive should expand

The year-by-year list can become the backbone for individual seasons and finals without requiring duplicated narratives. Priority children include the 2021 Washington–Chicago final, Portland's 2022 championship, the 2024 Orlando–Washington final and the 2025 Gotham–Washington final. Each detailed article should add authentic match facts, lineups, coaches, stadium details and original sources. Club pages such as Washington Spirit link back to the master list, while player profiles such as Sophia Wilson link to the exact title they helped win. This provides useful navigation across the historical NWSL graph rather than a shallow series of lookalike pages.
