History

Football was played at Anfield before Liverpool FC existed. Everton used the ground during the 1880s and won the First Division there in 1891, but a dispute between club officials and ground owner John Houlding led Everton to leave for the site that became Goodison Park. Houlding was left with a stadium but no team, and Liverpool Football Club was subsequently created in 1892. Anfield developed gradually from a modest late-Victorian ground into one of England’s most recognisable football venues. The Spion Kop became its defining stand and successive rebuilding projects increased capacity while retaining the close relationship between the stadium and surrounding neighbourhood.
