Overview

Naples’ Stadio Giorgio Ascarelli opened in 1930 as Napoli’s new home. Enlarged for the 1934 World Cup, it staged Hungary–Egypt and the Germany–Austria third-place match before being destroyed during wartime bombing in 1942.

History

Built in 1929–30 as a new home for SSC Napoli and opened in February 1930.
The stadium was associated with Napoli president Giorgio Ascarelli and was also known as Stadio Vesuvio/Partenopeo in different periods.
Expanded in preparation for the 1934 World Cup, raising capacity to about 40,000.
Hosted Hungary 4–2 Egypt and Germany 3–2 Austria at the 1934 tournament.
Destroyed during Allied bombing of Naples in 1942 and never rebuilt.
