History
Borussia Dortmund was founded in 1909 by a group of young men connected to the Catholic Trinity Parish in Dortmund. Eighteen founders established the new club after conflict over their desire to play football independently. BVB's first official match followed in January 1911, and the club gradually moved through regional competition before becoming a major force in German football. Dortmund won national honours before the creation of the Bundesliga and became one of the new league's important clubs after 1963. Later generations produced domestic title runs and major European achievements, including Champions League success in the 1990s. The club's home, now Signal Iduna Park, and its rivalry with Bayern Munich are central to its modern identity.
