History

The decision to establish the Bundesliga was taken in 1962, and the inaugural season began on 24 August 1963 with 16 clubs. Germany had previously relied on regional Oberliga competitions feeding into a national championship. The new nationwide league created a consistent professional top division and later expanded to the 18-club format associated with most of its history. The Bundesliga became the main stage for clubs such as Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Werder Bremen, Hamburg and others, while also producing a long line of globally influential players and coaches. Footballopedia treats the Bundesliga as a competition hub connecting season histories, German clubs, stadiums, managers, scoring records and European campaigns. It also provides a bridge between pre-Bundesliga German football history and the modern national league system.
