CHAPTER 01

What is the Concacaf W Champions Cup?

The Concacaf W Champions Cup is the regional women’s club championship for North America, Central America and the Caribbean. It is a club competition, not the Concacaf W Championship for national teams and not the men’s Concacaf Champions Cup. Its launch gave leading teams from the NWSL, Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil and other participating domestic leagues a shared competitive route. The first championship was decided in May 2025 and the second in May 2026. For an English-language United States encyclopedia, this competition is important because it connects American clubs such as Gotham FC and Washington Spirit with increasingly prominent Mexican women’s sides.

CHAPTER 02

Why a new women’s continental tournament mattered

Before this competition, individual cross-border friendlies and invitation tournaments could offer meaningful matches, but they did not constitute a consistent route to a regional women’s club title. Concacaf’s competition provided a formal structure and a recognized trophy, while giving fans new comparisons between NWSL and Liga MX Femenil squads. A continental title should not be substituted for an NWSL Championship or Shield when describing a club’s honors. Equally, a club from Mexico should be linked to its women’s team identity, not automatically to a men’s club entity with a similar name. Proper canonical identities make the historical record more useful as the tournament grows.

CHAPTER 03

How the competition connects leagues and clubs

The tournament has used group-stage play followed by a centralized finals stage with semifinals, a third-place match and the final. Qualification paths come from domestic performance and the confederation’s allocation of places; the precise places and details may change by edition. Participants have included teams from the United States, Mexico and other Concacaf nations. Keeping results by season is more informative than treating each edition as an unrelated event: readers can compare participants, scorers, finalists, venues and progress of each national league. The 2025 and 2026 finals already provide contrasting examples, with winners coming from different sides of the border.

CHAPTER 04

2024/25: Gotham FC makes history

Gotham FC became the competition’s first champion by beating Tigres UANL Femenil 1–0 on May 24, 2025 at Estadio Universitario in Nuevo León, Mexico. The final was tense: Tigres goalkeeper Itzel González saved a penalty from Midge Purce in first-half stoppage time. In the 82nd minute Esther González had her penalty saved, then reacted to the rebound and scored the only goal. Gotham’s victory established the first name on the W Champions Cup honors list. It also gave the American club a continental achievement separate from its NWSL playoff championships. A dedicated match page explains how the decisive goal was scored without flattening the event to a single scoreline.

CHAPTER 05

2025/26: Club América answers for Liga MX Femenil

The second final took place May 23, 2026 at Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca. Club América Femenil beat Washington Spirit 5–3, becoming the first Mexican club to win the competition. América led 2–0, fell behind 2–3 after a Washington comeback, then scored three more goals. Geyse scored twice, Irene Guerrero restored América’s lead, and an own goal in stoppage time completed the result. Washington’s Rosemonde Kouassi also scored twice. The spectacle made the continental rivalry more than a theoretical comparison of league strength: both finalists produced sustained periods of attacking control in the same match. This should be recorded as the 2025/26 title, not a second Gotham win.

CHAPTER 06

Champions list and the difference between trophies

For the first two editions, the champions are: 2024/25 — NJ/NY Gotham FC (United States), winners against Tigres UANL Femenil, 1–0; 2025/26 — Club América Femenil (Mexico), winners against Washington Spirit, 5–3. The match score is not a season aggregate. The W Champions Cup is a regional title and is separate from the NWSL Championship, NWSL Shield, Liga MX Femenil playoffs and any FIFA global women’s club championship. An evergreen honors table can continue to expand as future finals are completed, but future winners must not be filled in before the matches are played.

CHAPTER 07

Path to FIFA women’s club tournaments

Concacaf has described its W Champions Cup as the region’s qualifying pathway toward FIFA-organized women’s club competitions, including the annual FIFA Women’s Champions Cup and the planned 2028 Women’s Club World Cup. Gotham’s inaugural championship secured a route to both the 2026 Champions Cup and 2028 Club World Cup, according to the 2025 final report. Club América’s 2025/26 victory secured qualification for the 2027 Women’s Champions Cup as part of the qualifying framework for the 2028 event. Exact berth distributions and tournament regulations should be linked to the appropriate edition because international calendars can change.

What Footballopedia should cover next

This hub is a high-value starting point for separate club histories of Club América Femenil, Tigres UANL Femenil and other Mexican competitors, alongside the existing Gotham and Washington Spirit profiles. Those club pages should be created only when verified women’s squad, honors, venue and historical facts are available. The next useful child topics include full season results and major qualifying matches, not an automated page for every fixture. Until dedicated club profiles exist, the hub should describe opponents accurately without linking to guessed URLs. The first two finals are particularly promising for American readers searching for scores, winners and the relationship between NWSL and Liga MX Femenil.
