The full story
Charlton graduated from Manchester United’s youth system and became one of the central figures in Matt Busby’s rebuilding of the team after the 1958 Munich air disaster. Across seventeen years in United’s first team he played 758 matches and scored 249 goals, winning three league titles, the FA Cup and the 1968 European Cup. His long-range shooting, athleticism and ability to play across midfield and attack made him a defining player of the club’s post-war history.
For England he won 106 caps, scored 49 goals and played a decisive role in the 1966 World Cup triumph at Wembley. Footballopedia connects Charlton to Manchester United, England, Munich, Wembley, World Cup 1966, the European Cup, George Best, Denis Law and Matt Busby, making him one of the strongest bridges between club and national-team history.
