History

The club began in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR, created by railway workers in Manchester. It entered the Football League in 1892 and, after financial difficulties around the turn of the century, was reorganised and renamed Manchester United in 1902. The club won its first English league title in 1908 and moved to Old Trafford in 1910. United's history includes the Busby Babes, the 1958 Munich air disaster and the rebuilding led by Matt Busby, culminating in the 1968 European Cup. A later era under Alex Ferguson transformed the club into the dominant English side of much of the Premier League period and produced another major European cycle. Footballopedia connects Manchester United to the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, Old Trafford, the Manchester derby and generations of players including Bobby Charlton, George Best, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.
