The full story
Best joined Manchester United as a teenager from Belfast and developed under Matt Busby into a dribbler and goalscorer capable of deciding matches from wide or central positions. He helped United win two English league titles and, most importantly, the 1968 European Cup, the first won by an English club. That same year he received the Ballon d’Or.
His combination of close control, acceleration and personality made him a sporting and cultural figure beyond Old Trafford, although his top-level career declined unusually early. Footballopedia connects Best to Manchester United, Northern Ireland, Old Trafford, Matt Busby, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law, the 1968 European Cup and the post-Munich rebuilding of United, giving his profile importance in both sporting and social-history branches.
