Biography

The full story

Koeman developed into one of the most prolific scoring defenders in elite football, combining long-range shooting and set-piece ability with distribution from deep positions. After success in the Netherlands he joined FC Barcelona in 1989 and became a central member of Johan Cruyff’s Dream Team. His free-kick against Sampdoria at Wembley in the 1992 European Cup final delivered Barcelona’s first title in the competition.

Barcelona records list more than 100 goals for Koeman during six seasons, an exceptional total for a defensive player. He also won major honours with the Netherlands, including EURO 1988, and later built a long coaching career that eventually included the Barcelona first team. Footballopedia links him to Barcelona, PSV, the Netherlands, Wembley, Cruyff, the European Cup and the managerial layer of the graph.
