Der Klassiker

Overview

Der Klassiker is the modern high-profile rivalry between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, Germany’s two most internationally visible clubs of the recent era.

History

Unlike older local derbies, Bayern–Dortmund became known as Der Klassiker primarily because the clubs repeatedly challenged each other for Germany’s major honours. The rivalry intensified especially from the 1990s and again during Jürgen Klopp’s Dortmund era, when BVB interrupted Bayern’s domestic dominance and the clubs met in major cup and European matches. Footballopedia links Der Klassiker to Bayern, Dortmund, Bundesliga seasons, DFB-Pokal, the 2013 Champions League final and figures such as Klopp, Guardiola, Lewandowski and Thomas Müller.
