Bayern Munich’s 2020 Treble and the Six-Trophy Year

Overview

The 2019/20 season did not begin as a straightforward Bayern Munich march to every title.

History

AN UNEXPECTED MANAGERIAL TURNAROUND. The 2019/20 season did not begin as a straightforward Bayern Munich march to every title. Following an inconsistent start, Hansi Flick took charge and helped build a team with greater cohesion, coordinated pressure and rapid attacking combinations. Domestic performances improved and the side increasingly looked capable of competing deep into the Champions League. Unlike the 2013 treble, this campaign then unfolded during the pandemic, which interrupted competitions and changed their scheduling and match formats. THE PRESSURE BEHIND THE SPECTACULAR SCORELINES. Bayern’s attack is often remembered for its individual totals and the 8–2 Champions League quarter-final win over Barcelona. Yet the structure mattered: Joshua Kimmich and Thiago helped circulate and recover possession; Leon Goretzka offered driving runs, while Thomas Müller linked pressing with movement between lines. Robert Lewandowski supplied finishing, supported by Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and others. Bayern frequently defended by pressing high rather than retreating into a deep block, an aggressive strategy that could leave space behind their back line. LISBON AND A THIRD TROPHY. Bayern won the Bundesliga and DFB Cup before the delayed Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Lisbon on 23 August 2020. Coman scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory. PSG’s attacking talent and Bayern’s own opportunities made it a more finely balanced final than the club’s earlier routs. Manuel Neuer produced decisive goalkeeping, reinforcing that the treble required defensive performance as well as a spectacular attack. The final should not be confused with the FIFA Club World Cup staged later. SIX TROPHIES ACROSS A DISRUPTED CALENDAR. Bayern subsequently won the UEFA Super Cup, German Supercup and FIFA Club World Cup, the last being completed in February 2021. This sequence is frequently described as six trophies in a year, but the unusual calendar deserves explanation: the Club World Cup took place the following calendar year. It is therefore more accurate to specify the competitions and dates than to treat the achievement as if every match belonged to the same uninterrupted calendar season. LEGACY AND COMPARISON WITH 2013. The two Bayern treble sides shared an ability to adapt but differed in style, personnel and circumstances. The 2013 team grew from a long build-up under Heynckes; Flick’s 2020 side emerged from an abrupt tactical and psychological reset and then played through pandemic disruption. A flagship Bayern history should link both accounts without flattening them into a repeated statistic. Their contrasting paths explain why the institution has sustained success through changing football eras.
