History

Football reached Bilbao through British workers and Basques returning from Britain, and Athletic Club traces its foundation to 1898. The club established itself as one of the formative powers of Spanish football and opened San Mamés in 1913. Its long-running policy of fielding players developed in or connected to the Basque football system is a defining part of its identity. Footballopedia connects Athletic Club to La Liga, Copa del Rey, San Mamés, Basque football, historic managers and future season and player pages.
