History
Paris Saint-Germain emerged in 1970 from a project to create a major professional club in Paris. Paris Football Club and Stade Sangermanois agreed to merge, with the Paris Saint-Germain name formally accepted in August 1970. The club's early years included promotion to the top flight and a later institutional split, after which Paris Saint-Germain continued under its own identity. PSG eventually established the Parc des Princes as its long-term home and became one of the dominant clubs in French football. Its modern era brought an international roster of elite players and a much larger global audience. Footballopedia uses PSG as a bridge between Ligue 1, the Champions League, Parc des Princes and careers such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappé, while also preserving the club's less familiar founding story and its relationship to the broader history of professional football in Paris.
