Biography

The full story

Cruyff became the most visible player associated with Ajax’s great early-1970s teams and the Netherlands side that reached the 1974 World Cup final. A three-time Ballon d’Or winner, he joined Barcelona in 1973 and immediately helped the club win its first league title in more than a decade. His movement, technique and interpretation of space made him one of the central figures of the Total Football era.

His second transformative period at Barcelona came as coach from 1988. Cruyff built the Dream Team, won four consecutive league titles and delivered the club’s first European Cup in 1992. Footballopedia therefore treats him as both a player and coaching hub, connecting Ajax, Barcelona, Netherlands, World Cup 1974, the European Cup, Ronald Koeman, Pep Guardiola and a large tactical lineage that extends far beyond his own playing statistics.
