Beckenbauer as Manager: West Germany’s 1990 World Cup Triumph
Overview
After reaching the 1986 final, Beckenbauer guided West Germany to the 1990 title, becoming a World Cup winner as player and team boss.
History
Beckenbauer took charge of the West Germany national team in 1984 without following a conventional long club-management apprenticeship. At the 1986 World Cup his side reached the final but lost 3–2 to Diego Maradona’s Argentina. Four years later in Italy, the team blended experienced leaders with a more coherent tournament structure. West Germany met Argentina again in the final in Rome on 8 July 1990. Andreas Brehme converted a late penalty for a 1–0 victory. The achievement placed Beckenbauer in a small group of men who won the World Cup both as players and as managers, following Mário Zagallo. In assessing his managerial legacy, the tactical work of assistants and the strength of the squad matter alongside his authority in the dressing room. His player-captain triumph in 1974 and manager triumph in 1990 remain distinct chapters of German football history.
