Milan Derby / Derby della Madonnina

Overview

The Derby della Madonnina is the Milan rivalry between Inter and AC Milan, named for the Madonnina statue above the city’s cathedral.

History

The first derby between the clubs was played in 1908, shortly after Inter’s formation, with the first official meeting following in 1909. The rivalry has since been played across Italian league and cup football as well as European competition, with both clubs sharing San Siro for much of their history. Footballopedia treats the derby as a bridge between AC Milan, Inter, San Siro, Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League history. Its graph also captures the unusual number of elite players and coaches who have represented both sides of the city rivalry.
