El Clásico
Overview
El Clásico is the rivalry between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, one of the most widely followed recurring fixtures in world football.
History
Barcelona and Real Madrid first met in 1902 in the Copa de la Coronación, before the creation of La Liga. Their first league meeting came in 1929, and the rivalry developed through repeated domestic title races, cup ties, famous player transfers and European eras in which both clubs became global powers. Because the two clubs dominate many branches of Spanish football history, El Clásico is a major Footballopedia graph hub rather than a single match page. It links Real Madrid, Barcelona, La Liga, Copa del Rey, Bernabéu, Camp Nou and generations of players and managers from Di Stéfano and Cruyff to Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
