History

The Estádio do Maracanã opened in 1950 as Brazil prepared to host the FIFA World Cup. Its most famous early match was Uruguay’s 2–1 victory over Brazil in the decisive 1950 final-round game, the Maracanazo, which remains one of the defining events in World Cup history. The stadium was rebuilt and reopened ahead of the 2014 World Cup, when it staged another World Cup final, and it has also hosted major Brazilian club matches, Copa América finals and Olympic football. Footballopedia connects Maracanã to Brazil, Uruguay, the 1950 and 2014 World Cups, Flamengo, major finals and the wider Rio football graph.
