History

Built in 1925–26 at the initiative of AC Milan president Piero Pirelli, San Siro opened as a football-only ground inspired by English stadium design. The City of Milan later acquired and expanded it, and Inter began using the venue as a home ground from the 1947–48 season. Major reconstructions created its second and third tiers, the latter for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The stadium has hosted World Cup matches, European Cup and Champions League finals, and generations of the Derby della Madonnina. Footballopedia links San Siro directly to AC Milan, Inter, Serie A, European competition, the Milan derby and the players and managers whose careers are inseparable from the venue.
