History

The club was created in 1914 by members of São Paulo’s Italian community and quickly became a major force in Brazilian football. In 1942 Palestra Italia adopted the name Palmeiras, a change that became part of one of the club’s defining identity stories. Across later decades Palmeiras accumulated major state, national and Copa Libertadores honours.
