History
The competition was developed in 1955 after the French newspaper L’Équipe promoted the idea of a Europe-wide club tournament. UEFA accepted responsibility for organising the new competition, and the first European Cup matches were played in September 1955. Real Madrid won the inaugural edition and the first five tournaments. The European Cup evolved in format over subsequent decades and was relaunched as the UEFA Champions League in 1992/93. It became the central annual competition connecting the strongest clubs from UEFA member associations. Footballopedia uses the Champions League as a major graph hub: club histories connect to individual seasons and finals, while player and manager pages connect to appearances, goals, trophies and decisive matches. Its long history makes it particularly valuable for linking historical clubs such as Real Madrid, AC Milan, Bayern Munich and Liverpool with modern-era stars and managers.
