History

Arsenal began in Woolwich in south-east London in 1886, when workers associated with the Dial Square armaments factory formed a football team. The club passed through the names Dial Square, Royal Arsenal and Woolwich Arsenal before the move north to Highbury in 1913 reshaped its identity and geography. Arsenal became one of the defining institutions of English league football. Herbert Chapman's inter-war teams helped modernise both the club and the game, while later generations under managers such as George Graham and Arsène Wenger added major domestic honours. Wenger's period connected Arsenal to a more international playing style and included the unbeaten 2003/04 Premier League season.
