Manchester Derby
Overview
The Manchester Derby is the city rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City, rooted in meetings between their predecessor clubs in the nineteenth century.
History
The clubs first met in 1881 when Manchester City’s predecessor West Gorton (St Mark’s) faced Newton Heath, the club that later became Manchester United. As both sides entered national competition, the fixture grew from a local match into one of English football’s most prominent derbies. The rivalry gained another layer in the Premier League era as both clubs became regular title contenders. Footballopedia uses the derby to connect Manchester United, Manchester City, Old Trafford, Etihad Stadium, the Premier League, FA Cup and the many players and managers who crossed or shaped the divide.
