History

The original Wembley was built as the centrepiece of the British Empire Exhibition and opened in April 1923. Its first FA Cup final immediately became famous for the enormous crowd, and the stadium’s Twin Towers went on to become symbols of English football. Wembley hosted the 1966 World Cup final, EURO 1996 matches and decades of FA Cup finals and England internationals. The old stadium closed in 2000 and was demolished to make way for a new national stadium on the same site. The replacement opened in 2007 with a 90,000 capacity and retained Wembley’s role as the main stage for England, domestic cup finals and major European fixtures.
