History

Chelsea Football Club was founded on 10 March 1905 in the Rising Sun pub opposite Stamford Bridge. Unlike many clubs that built a ground after forming a team, Chelsea's story began with an existing stadium and the decision to create a club to play there. The new side entered league football soon afterward and built a substantial London following. Chelsea's history includes early star-driven teams, domestic cup successes, financial difficulties and later revival. From the late 1990s onward the club became increasingly prominent in English and European competition, and the 2000s brought a sustained period of league and cup success. Footballopedia links Chelsea to Stamford Bridge, the Premier League, FA Cup, Champions League, London rivalries, managers and a large network of players whose careers crossed England and continental Europe.
