History

Hotspur Football Club was formed in 1882 by boys connected to Hotspur Cricket Club and local schools. The name Tottenham Hotspur was adopted soon afterward, and the club progressed from games on Tottenham Marshes to more formal grounds and organised competition. Spurs became professional in the 1890s and later established White Hart Lane as their historic home. Tottenham's national importance grew through cup success and through the 1960/61 side, which won the English league and FA Cup double. The club also became the first British team to win a UEFA competition when it lifted the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. Its north London rivalry with Arsenal is one of the most enduring in English football.
